If you have travelled to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, you may think of the Thai-style temples. But did you know that some of the temples were also influenced by China? And the temple which is important to both the Thais and Chinese Thais is Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan, the temple that both the Thais and Chinese Thais in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province place a high value on. Let’s go on a journey to experience the temple of two races.

 

Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan is an ancient temple of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province which the tourists and locals highly revere and flow in to pay respect for auspiciousness. If you enter from the front of Wat Phanan Choeng, you will find a spacious parking lot which is very convenient for those who take cars or motorcycles to visit. On the right of the temple is Wihan Luang Pho To, the important venue of the temple, as it is the place where the people and tourists pour in to pay homage to Luang Pho To or Phra Phuttha Trai Rattana Nayok, the principal Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara in the vihara, which is another respectable Buddha image for Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya residents. If you come to Wat Phanan Choeng, you need to pay respect to Luang Pho To for propitiousness and there was a robe changing ceremony for Luang Pho To every year which was later cancelled later. In addition, on the left side of the vihara, there is the ordination hall which enshrines the three Buddha images; the stucco Buddha image, the golden Buddha image and the copper-alloy Buddha image. The Buddha images made from gold and copper alloy were originally plastered. When the plaster coating chipped off, it revealed the golden and alloy surface. Also, there is Khian Vihara where the crowned Buddha image from the Ayutthaya period is enshrined. This vihara has outstanding murals which refers to the Chinese patterns of flowerpots, utensils and offerings on all the four sides. Furthermore, the back of Wihan Luang Pho To is Chao Mae Soi Dok Mak Shrine which is respected by a great number of Thais and Chinese Thais and there is a story about Chao Mae Soi Dok Mak, a sad story that has been told for a long time. Consequently, people like to come here to worship for their blessings of love and having children. If successful, most people give pearls, silk fabric or lion dance for offerings. It is considered another place that is greatly respected by the people. If you want to pray for both Thai and Chinese blessings to increase your auspiciousness, you can come to Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province.
