History
The bridge is located in Baan Thachompoo M.4 ,T. Tha Pladuk, A. Mae Tha, Lamphun, which is in between the Khun Tan Train Station and Thachompoo Train Station. The construction of this historical bridge began in 1918 (B.E. 2461) and finished in 1920 (B.E. 2463). The purpose of this bridge was to be the railway from Lampang to Chiang Mai. Thachompoo bridge was constructed next to Khun Tan Tunnel, the Bangkok-Chiang Mai route, as the railway to pass over the Mae Tha River. The western architecture-style bridge is in curve-shape painted with white color. During the construction period, local people were very excited and visited the bridge because it was the new thing. They sold food and products to the labors and workers.
This white bridge, which is located next to the Khun Tan Tunnel is outstanding in the middle of the field. It is different from other railway bridges because it was built from the 87.3-meter long reinforced concrete. This shows the new challenge since the general common railway were built from metal which resisted to the vibration and be more flexible. However, the construction period was during the war period so the metal was rarely available. With the great calculation and management, Thachompoo bridge was built completely and is still in good condition until todays.
At present, Thachompoo Bridge is not only the railway crossing over the river but also the boundary of Doi Khun Tan National Park and National Forest. Furthermore, the bridge is the landmark of State Railway of Thailand, thus, it is well-known to Thai and foreign tourists. This is one of the landmark which is not to be missed.
