Description
If we want to mention the old city which was the capital of the country with dominant power for 417 years, it must be the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the kingdom with 33 kings (some textbooks or academics mention 34 kings) who reigned over the kingdom and the model of the current Rattanakosin Kingdom.
King Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok Maharat, King Rama I, was pleased to build the Rattanakosin Kingdom with reference to the city plan and architecture from the Ayutthaya Kingdom as well as build the Grand Palace with reference to the ancient Grand Palace in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Although, at present, the ancient Grand Palace is an important ancient remains of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, a great number of both Thai and foreign tourists visit the place. In addition, there is Wat Phra Si Sanphet which is an ancient royal monastery and model for Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) at present. If you come to visit Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, Wat Phra Si Sanphet is another place that you should not miss. If you enter the ancient Grand Palace area, in front of the ticket office, you will see Wihan Mongkhon Bophit where Phra Mongkhon Bophit, a respectable Buddha image for Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya residents, is situated. If you wish to enter Wat Phra Si Sanphet and the ancient Grand Palace, there will be a ticket office at the front. The tickets are 10 baht for Thai people and 50 baht for foreigners. On the side, there is a map of Wat Phra Si Sanphet. When you go through the entrance, you will see 3 large pagodas lining up from the east to the west which are part of Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Tourists mostly take photos and listen to the descriptive information from tour guides at this point. If you want a photo of all the 3 pagodas, face the pagodas and walk to the left until you get the perspective for the 3 pagodas. It is the point where you can see the pagodas in the widest angle. Furthermore, you can walk around the area for sightseeing. In the east of the temple, you will find Wihan Phra Si Sanphet where only the pillars remain. Phra Si Sanphet Buddha image was summoned to be enshrined at Phra Maha Chedi Sri Sanphetdayan at Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn (Wat Pho). If you walk inside, you will enter the ancient Grand Palace area where you can walk around and see various throne halls. Some throne halls are still in perfect condition while for some, only the the bases remain. You can walk around for sightseeing until exiting at Wat Phra Si Sanphet again. While walking around, you can imagine back to the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the old days that if it was still in perfect condition, how great and beautiful it would be. The whole area is very spacious. You may take some time to walk all around the inside of the ancient Grand Palace. You should prepare your sun protection accessories and drinking water.
If you want to experience a remarkable and ancient historical site of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, please visit Wat Phra Si Sanphet and the ancient Grand Palace, the models for the current Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
